I primi 7" pubblicati gli procurano una buona notorietà in campo Northern soul, ad esempio con: Soul Meetin' / Don't It Make You Feel Funky, AGC records 1968, a cui fa seguito una doppietta scritta e prodotta da Sly Stone: Home Sweet Home - Part II / I'm Goin' Home, Scepter records 1969 e: Life And Death In G&A, Stone flower 1970.
Ruby Dean / Train Of Thought ( 1973) è il singolo di debutto su Enterprise, label satellite della Stax, entrambi i brani li ritroviamo sull'album: Mighty Joe Hicks dello stesso anno, da cui segnalo anche: the Team.
Il sottovalutato Joe Hicks è anche un signor compositore, sue le firme su: Sound of the city per: Delaney & Bonnie & Friends', oppure: That's The Way I Feel About Cha, per Bobby Womack con cui co-scrive anche: Simple man e Ruby Dean.
