soul singer, ma anche tastierista e percussionista che nonostante nasca a Brooklyn è un grande interprete di southern soul, come testimonia il suo primo album: Sweet southern soul, inciso nel 1969 per la Cotillon e prodotto da Jerry Wexler, da cui consiglio: Rock me baby.
Per il secondo album: With You In Mind , Volt 1971, Johnson si affida ad Allen Toissant, che produce e firma tutti i brani ( in alcuni appare pure Leo Nocentelli), con perle del calibro di: Frisco Here I Come e: the Beat.
