Organista jazz di enorme levatura, nato con l'hard bop si inserisce nel filone soul\jazz che darà vita al revival acid jazz.
Il primo album di Holmes, su Pacific Jazz, con Ben Webster, fu registrato nel marzo 1961. da qui la serie di incisioni per: Pacific Jazz, Prestige, Groove Merchant e Muse, molti dei quali con Houston Person o con Jimmy Mc Griff.
